5.1 School Foundation

This course prepares students who wish to enter a school in the UK and continue their studies at University or College in Britain. Students are accepted with little or no English, tested on arrival and follow a course in Intensive English Language at the appropriate level for a minimum of 1 term. The English for Education Curriculum also focuses on the language in school subjects such as Mathematics, Science, The Environment, Computers, Art and Physical Education. Students who achieve the required standard can be entered for IGCSE’s in Mathematics, Combined Sciences, Business Studies, English as a second and Art. Cambridge English Language Examinations are also available. An integral part of the Foundation course is the experience of British Boarding School life. As well as the 25 hours of classroom time in the academic programme, students are expected to study in the evenings for a minimum of 5 hours per week and be involved in all aspects of school social and cultural life at weekends. Careers advice and help in gaining a place at a chosen school for further study forms part of our Personal, Social & Health Education programme.

5.2 Academic Year Short Courses

English for Education - a focus on the language of school subjects - and half term courses are available during the Autumn and Spring Terms. Students can follow English Plus Multi-Activities (English in the mornings followed by a selection of sports in the afternoon) from mid March onwards.

The courses include 15 hours of English tuition and a choice from the following options, for 6-9 hours per week, chosen at the time of enrolment.

Intensive English

Extra English classes in small groups with students focusing on grammar, use of English, vocabulary, speaking, and error correction centred around topics.

English plus Art

Instruction is provided in drawing and painting, collage, 3-D work, beach projects and photography.

English plus Football

Qualified coaches teach individual skills and team tactics in conditioned games.

English plus Golf

Golf professionals at Ufford Park Golf Centre provide coaching with more experienced golfers playing the course.

English plus Horseriding

Students learn the basics of horseriding and stable management before learning how to jump and ride out at Poplar Park Equestrian Centre.

English plus Multi-Activities

Students can participate in a selection of sports including basketball, cycling, orienteering, volleyball, badminton and squash.

English plus Music & Drama

Students use their talents in music and drama, culminating in performances to the school.

English plus Sailing

Qualified instructors teach at our on-site RYA accredited Watersports Centre.

English plus Tennis

Qualified professionals teach through practice drills and conditioned games with weekly tennis tournaments.

Tuition

Students sit an Entry Test on the first morning of their stay and are then placed in the class appropriate to the level obtained. Classes focus on integrating all skills – speaking, pronunciation, listening, reading and writing – but with an emphasis on speaking.

Excursions and Trips

Full day study excursions take place every Wednesday to places in the East of England such as Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge, Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich. The students do intensive preparation for the excursion and follow-up work. Every Saturday there is an excursion to London for general sightseeing, museum visits and shopping. Students are offered optional extra trips on a Sunday to Pleasurewood Hills theme park, Ipswich & Felixstowe.

Wednesday June 2nd- PHOTOGRAPHY

NORWICH - A visit to this picturesque cathedral city with an excursion to the Sainsbury Museum which holds a collection spanning 5000 years of creativity.

Wednesday June 9th – ENVIRONMENT

KENTWELL MANOR- A trip to a Tudor manor where students will discuss the problems of sustainability facing the world today as it did back in Tudor times.

Wednesday June 16th – TRAVEL AND TOURISM

CAMBRIDGE – a visit to our famous University City, where students will tour the colleges creating a tourist guide.

Wednesday June 23rd – FAMOUS PEOPLE

COLCHESTER- A trip to Britain’s oldest recorded town. Visited by the Emperor Claudius it was here that Boudica attacked the Romans. This town was the inspiration for Great British artists such as Constable and Gainsborough.

Wednesday June 30th- LEGENDS AND MYTHS

BURY ST.EDMUNDS – A visit to this historic market town, where 18 ‘witches’ were hanged in the 1600’s. Bury is a town steeped in local legends and folklore.

Wednesday July 7th – HISTORY

KENTWELL MANOR – A day with the Tudors! Students will experience life as it was in the past with this re-enactment set in beautiful surroundings.

Wednesday July 14th – SPORT AND FASHION

CAMBRIDGE – Visit this historic university town, winners of this year’s boat race. A vibrant student city, where students will experience a punt along the river. Followed by a walk into the fashionable town centre.

Wednesday July 21st – THE WORLD AROUND US

COLCHESTER ZOO – A trip to Europe’s finest zoo, which hosts over 260 rare species. This will be followed by a visit to Britain’s oldest town.

Wednesday July 28th – ART AND DESIGN

NORWICH- A visit to the Sainsbury Museum which holds a collection spanning 5000 years of creativity. The students will then be taken on a tour of the ancient castle and into the vibrant market place.

Wednesday 4th August – HEREOS AND VILLIANS

BURY ST. EDMUNDS-Situated in this ancient town students will visit Moyse’s hall Museum. This one time prison holds some gruesome exhibits covering social history! Students will then be taken on a historical tour of the town.

Wednesday 11th August - TIME OUT

CAMBRIDGE – A trip to this thriving university city. Students will be taken on a treasure hunt to explore the rambling streets and historical buildings.

Wednesday 18th August – MEDIA

NORWICH- A visit to an exhibition in the Castle Museum. ‘The beatles to Bowie’ examining cultural change through the music scene. Explore this beautiful city with its cathedrals and castle.

Wednesday 25th August – PAST LIVES

KENTWELL MANOR- A day with the Tudors! Students will experience life as it was in the past with this re-enactment set in beautiful surroundings.

Accommodation & Transfers

Single Room

Students are accommodated in one of our 4 on-site residences: the Manor, Fulmar House, Heron House and the Beach Houses. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided. There is a reduced one way transfer rate of £25 for students who arrive on flights which land at Heathrow or Stansted on a Sunday between the hours of 10.00-18.00. This rate is also valid for students who leave on flights which take-off from Heathrow or Stansted on a Saturday between the hours of 10.00-18.00. Please note: 1/ It may be necessary for students to wait at the airport on arrival or departure while we group students together. Students are supervised at all times. 2/ We need to have received the flight details at the latest one week before arrival in order to provide these reduced rate transfers.

Welfare

24 hour emergency numbers are issued to students and their parents. A member of staff can be contacted at any time should students encounter any problem or difficulty. There is a school nurse who is on call 24 hours per day. We maintain a very close supervision of students at all times to ensure their safety and well-being and that they derive the maximum benefit from their course. Students are given an introduction on the first morning and are expected to obey the school rules.
