Module 1: Welcome to SKOLA & Our Core Principles

1. Welcome Aboard!
A huge welcome to the SKOLA team! We are delighted you're joining us for an exciting Summer 2025.
Our mission at SKOLA is 'Learn English and Discover Other Cultures'. Since our founding in 1969, situated uniquely within one of London's Royal Parks, we've welcomed over 1,000 students annually from more than 60 countries around the world.
You are now part of a dedicated, professional team focused on providing an exceptional and safe learning experience. Underpinning everything we do are our three core principles: Ready, Safe, Kind. You'll see these principles in action across the school.

2. Who We Are: SKOLA's Mission, History, and Values
These three principles – Ready, Safe, and Kind – form the bedrock of SKOLA's behaviour policy and expectations. They are vital for creating a positive, consistent, and respectful environment, and they apply equally to everyone in our community – both staff and students. Understanding, demonstrating, and reinforcing these principles is a key part of your role.
-
Ready: This means being prepared, punctual, focused, and properly equipped for your specific role and responsibilities.
-
What it looks like: Arriving on time for duties, following the SKOLA Teaching Framework and curriculum (for teaching staff), having necessary materials, communicating clearly and purposefully with colleagues and students, being organised.
-
What it's not: Being late, unprepared for lessons or activities, lacking necessary equipment, unclear communication.
-
-
Safe: This is our top priority – actively ensuring the physical, emotional, and psychological safety and well-being of our students and staff.
-
What it looks like: Rigorously following all safeguarding procedures (you'll receive specific training on this), conducting risk assessments for activities and trips, maintaining clear professional boundaries, supervising students appropriately, using equipment correctly, communicating in a way that makes others feel secure and recording then reporting all concerns in a timely manner.
-
What it's not: Neglecting supervision, ignoring safety rules, engaging in or allowing dangerous behaviour, inappropriate communication or boundary crossing, failing to report concerns.
-
-
Kind: This means interacting with everyone politely, supportively, considerately, and with empathy.
-
What it looks like: Speaking respectfully to students, parents, agents, and colleagues, fostering teamwork and mutual trust, actively listening, offering help and encouragement, challenging unkind behaviour (like bullying, exclusion, gossip, or derogatory language) calmly and appropriately.
-
What it's not: Rudeness, dismissiveness, participating in gossip, bullying, discriminatory language or actions.
-
Putting Principles into Practice Every Day:
Your behaviour sets the tone. By consistently modelling 'Ready, Safe, Kind,' you create a positive learning atmosphere.
-
Focus on the Positive: Give your '1st Attention' to students who are meeting expectations – reinforce the behaviour you want to see.
-
Use Routines: Employ established SKOLA routines like 'Meet & Greet' (welcoming students purposefully) and 'End & Send' (dismissing calmly and clearly). These routines help students feel Safe and demonstrate that staff are Ready.
-
Be the Example: Your daily interactions are the most powerful way to demonstrate and encourage Kindness.
-
3. Living Our Principles: Understanding Key Policies
As a key member of the SKOLA team, your commitment to being 'Ready, Safe, Kind', engaging positively with students, and upholding professional standards is paramount.
To fully support you in this and ensure clarity on procedures, it's essential to understand the policies that guide our community. Please carefully read and familiarise yourself with the complete contents of these core documents:
-
SKOLA Ready, Safe, Kind Policy (Behaviour Policy): Defines the practical application of our core principles.
-
SKOLA Safeguarding Policy: Outlines our non-negotiable procedures for ensuring student welfare.
-
SKOLA Sexual Harassment Policy: Details our zero-tolerance approach and reporting mechanisms.
-
SKOLA Communication Policy: Guides professional interactions both internally and externally.
-
SKOLA Staff Handbook (2025): Our comprehensive guide to working at SKOLA. (Note: This is the current version for 2025 and is subject to updates; ensure you refer to this edition).
These policies provide the framework for your role and are crucial for maintaining the safe, effective environment SKOLA is committed to.
4. Safeguarding is Paramount
Protecting the children and young people (all students under 18) entrusted to our care is SKOLA's highest priority. This responsibility is the absolute core of our 'Safe' principle.
Your Safeguarding Duty – Non-Negotiable:
-
Read the Policy: You must read, understand, and adhere to the full SKOLA Safeguarding Policy. All staff share this critical responsibility.
-
Report ALL Concerns Immediately: If you see, hear, or are told anything that causes concern about a child's welfare – however small it may seem – you have a duty to report it IMMEDIATELY. Do not delay.
-
How to Report: Use the official SKOLA incident report form.. This can be found on the drive too by searching 'incident report form'.
-
Do NOT Investigate Yourself: Your responsibility is to report concerns promptly to a DSL. It is never your role to investigate suspicions yourself.
Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs):
-
Connor Middleton (Principal)
-
David Stephenson (Director of Studies - Gloucester Gate)
-
Malgosia Konieczna (Director of Studies - Regents Park / Explorers)
-
Teddy Chilton (Assistant Director of Studies - Gloucester Gate)
Professional Boundaries: Maintaining clear and strict professional boundaries in all interactions is fundamental to safeguarding. Always act professionally and be mindful of your conduct.
You will receive further, in-depth safeguarding training, including detailed procedures and scenario discussions, in Module 2.
5. Effective Communication
Our SKOLA Communication Policy guides how we interact efficiently, respectfully, and professionally, directly reflecting our 'Ready, Safe, Kind' principles. Key points include:
-
Using the appropriate communication channels for specific purposes (e.g., email for non-urgent matters, designated apps for group updates - details in the policy).
-
Respecting colleagues' 'Right to Disconnect' by avoiding non-emergency work communications outside of their contracted working hours.
Please ensure you read the full policy for detailed guidance on expectations and best practices.
6. Your SKOLA T-shirt & Lanyard: Be Seen, Be SKOLA!
Please wear your provided SKOLA t-shirt and official lanyard at all times when on site or on duty (including trips). Why?
-
Identification: It helps students, parents, and colleagues easily recognise you as a trusted member of the SKOLA team.
-
Professionalism: It presents a consistent, professional image.
-
Style: Okay, maybe not haute couture, but even Boris the bear (our mascot) thinks they look great!

Callum, student, Mr. Boris, and Oliver pose for a picture. Every Friday, leaving students are presented with a leaving certificate by their teacher. Teachers write the student certificates and reports (more on that later).
